Letter: Parking deficiencies

The casino has a problem in that they failed to lease from the city sufficient parking spaces

Penticton Western News letters to the editor.

As I pointed out recently, the casino has a problem in that they failed to lease from the city sufficient parking spaces to meet their needs.

They have effectively transferred the problem to the Penticton taxpayer by using many more parking spaces than they are entitled to or pay for. The city, to date, has made no effort to enforce the conditions of the lease, and the result is that the city does not have enough parking to meet its own customer requirements during busy periods.

In view of this parking deficiency, the city is proposing to purchase, at taxpayer expense, surrounding property to convert to parking. This action, I presume, is to allow the casino to continue to use unauthorized and unpaid for parking spots in the city portion of the parking lot.

If you feel that the city should enforce the lease conditions with the casino and allow them to use only the number of spaces that they pay for contact Joanne Kleb in the city engagement office at joanne.kleb@penticton.ca. If you are happy with the current situation, do nothing. Past experience with the city has shown that if enough people don’t complain about a ridiculous situation, nothing will happen.
