Alec Henderson brought back two bronze medals from the Canadian Junior National Championships in Quebec.

Henderson, 14, pulled off the feat in less-than-ideal conditions, according Apex Freestyle Club coach Kenni Kuroda. Upon arriving at the freestyle course in Le Relais, it had slushy snow, which became ice over the days.

“They have never skied blue ice before. It was a little eye-opener for them,” said Kuroda, who also had Ainsley MacDonald, Ethan Phillips and Cole Patton representing the club. “They did extremely well.”

Kuroda said what Henderson did was “awesome” as he was the only Apex skier to reach the podium.

“The depth of the field this year, I haven’t seen in quite some time. Especially the under-16 boys. It was really, really tough,” said Kuroda.

The national championships featured 60 males and 35 females.

MacDonald placed seventh in moguls and 12th in dual moguls. Phillips was 14th in moguls, while Patton was 32nd.

AFC was also represented by alumni. Brayden Kuroda was seventh among F16 men in moguls and dual moguls. In F18, Shaina Finlayson was fourth in dual moguls and 15th in moguls, while Chloe Kober was 23rd and seventh in dual.

In other freestyle skiing news, Kuroda was selected to the Canadian team to go to World Juniors in Italy from April 3 to 7.

AFC will be at the Timber Tour championships at Vernon’s Silverstar Mountain next weekend.
