THE PENTICTON BMX CLUB hosted a provincial race on June 11. It attracted nearly 150 riders

The home track at Lions Park was good to the Penticton BMX club on June 11.

“All the kids within the club did well,” said club president Andrew Bayston of their performances in the first of four circuit provincials races that went to Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops. “We always seem to do well on our own track.”

Members faced more competition as the event attracted nearly 150 riders from Vernon, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Squamish and Prince George, which had 15 riders.

“They boast a lot of really high-calibre racers,” said Bayston of Prince George. “They were quite dominating there as well.”

The club was able to attract more riders because the circuit started in Penticton this year rather then ending there. For the Prince George riders, it allowed them to compete in more races while circling back north.

Among the riders in the Penticton BMX Club who performed well were Brody and Zane McLean, Al Box, Corey Brown, Steve Almas and Liam Almas. Garrett Bayston won his first race in the four years since he has been competing.

Vanessa Gonzalez of the Penticton BMX Club said the expert riders performed better, but it is also a more difficult class.

“Everybody has lots of fun,” she said, adding they received lots of support from the other clubs in working on the track, which it needed following the rain.

Bayston was amazed with the support they were given. He also said that everyone is excited for their new track at Munson Mountain, where materials have been brought to begin work. Other clubs are excited about it as Penticton will be able to host a national race in the future.

“Everybody loves Penticton. They said it’s a beautiful spot,” said Bayston.

The club currently has 65 members. Every year the numbers go up and Bayston said with other sports finishing up, they start getting new riders as they go until October.
