Tuesday, May 24, has been declared “Vees Day” in Penticton after the city’s hockey team captured the Fred Page Cup this week in the B.C. Hockey League Finals.
“The Vees, once again, have made us all so proud of what they’ve accomplished,” said acting mayor Judy Sentes. “The team faced some setbacks, took them head-on, refused to give up, and stayed focused as a team on what they could achieve. And how they’ve achieved — now they are the BCHL champions.”
A championship parade down Lakeshore Drive starting at 4 p.m. will headline the festivities, with a party and free community barbecue at Penticton’s Rotary Park set to follow.
“The players and coaches and the whole organization are so proud to represent Penticton and to be able to share this championship with the community,” said Fred Harbinson, the Vees’ head coach, general manager and president.
Road closures are expected along Lakeshore on Tuesday afternoon, as a result of the parade.
The city is expected to make a service announcement prior to the event. Free parking downtown, however, has been confirmed after 3 p.m.
BC Transit in Penticton will also be free to use on May 24.
“We’re looking forward to hoisting the Fred Page Cup in front of all our fans,” Harbinson added.
