The Penticton Lakers women’s rugby team are off to the B.C. Rugby Union Girls Rugby Provincial Championship at the end of May.

Although they dropped a 31-0 decision to a much older, more experienced Mount Boucherie Secondary School squad in the Valley finals recently, the team advanced with a forfeited game against Merritt Secondary School.

About the Mount Boucherie game coach Ian Butters said: “Our young women played very well. By way of example, MBSS had five junior (grades 9-10) players in a squad of 20. All the rest were seniors. We had four senior players in a squad of 18. All the rest were juniors.”

The Lakers qualified for the finals with an earlier win over the Salmon Arm Jewels in Salmon Arm, a team they had lost to twice during the regular season.

The provincials this year are in Williams Lake from May 24 to 26.
