Mustang senior girls basketball win tournament

Sweeping three games helped the Princess Margaret Mustangs capture their first tournament.

Sweeping their three games helped the Princess Margaret Mustangs capture the Summerland Secondary School senior girl’s basketball tournament.

The final victory was 65-53 against the Kelowna Christian Knights. The Mustangs outscored the Knights 19-5 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Kari-Grace Pym and Brooklyn Pichette led the Mustangs with 14 and 13 points respectively, while Abby Winstone dominated in the paint and scored 10 points.

“It was a good weekend for our team. We did lots of good things but still have many areas in which we can improve,” said Mustangs coach Dave Killick. “Hopefully if the girls work hard and continue to put in extra time in the mornings, we will be playing well into March.”

The Mustangs started with a 64-41 win against the South Okanagan Secondary Hornets. Nerves forced the Mustangs to come from behind and earn the win.

Callan Cooper led with 14 points while Rylee McKinlay and Pym each had 10.

In the second game the Mustangs downed Summerland 83-75 with Payton Charley leading with 12 points.  Erin Gabriel and Winstone each contributed 10 points.

Next action for the Mustangs is weekend in Vernon to face the top AA teams in the valley.
