Tier 2 peewee Vees enter playoffs with a tournament win, while Tier 3 peewee Vees face Kelowna
Penticton's peewee Tier 2 Vees closed their regular season by winning a tournament in Trail.
The Vees met a familiar opponent in the final game, the Port Moody Panthers, who they defeated in round robin play 5-2. This time the Vees won 7-1. They started the tournament with a 5-2 loss to the West Kelowna Warriors but bounced back to defeat the Nelson Leafs 4-1. Finishing in first gave the Vees a bye into the final, pitting them against the Panthers. Playing for the Vees are Bryn Carter, Ethan McLaughlin, Jacob Acheson, Tyler Pisiak, Ben Olsen, Thor Morhart, Matthew Byrne, Liam McLaren, Jayden Carey, Naidyn Keogh, Cairo Rogers, Austin O'Neil, Bailey Tamminga, Nash Moog, Brendan Craig, Travis Fehr, Matts Bratton and Darius Venables. The head coach is Rob McLaughlin assisted by Randy Craig and Dennis Pisiak.
This weekend, atom, peewee, bantam, midget female and midget teams begin their playoff seasons in pursuit of qualifying for provincials.
The peewee Tier 3 Vees face Kelowna, who they were 1-2-1 against during the regular season. Coach Chris Danby said his team got better against Kelowna as the season progressed.
"If the team plays the systems we have set out for them, that's when we have been successful," said Danby, adding that playing like they are capable, there's no reason why they can't beat Kelowna. "I think of the teams that we have played against, like in the top of our division, we match up pretty well against them."
The strength in the Vees comes from the players working hard.
"We don't have any one kid on our team that's a true super star," said Danby.
