Steam lose back-to-back to Chiefs

Summerland slips to below .500, while Osoyoos picks up a pair of victories

The Summerland Steam were topped twice by the Kelowna Chiefs last weekend in a home and home series.

With the back-to-back losses, the Steam are now 7-8-0 in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and are two points back of the Chiefs for second-place in the Okanagan Division. At the Summerland Arena on Oct.23, the Steam lost 2-1 with all the offence coming in the second period. The Chiefs took a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes, while Riley Pettitt put the Steam within a goal at 1:03.

Jacob Mullen made 17 saves in the loss.

On Oct. 24 in Kelowna, the Cheifs won 3-2. They opened the scoring in the first period with a Dakota Kittle power-play goal at 3:50. They led 3-0 before the Steam finally hit the scoresheet in the final 10 minutes of the second period. Keenan Scott buried a feed from Lathan McKinney. In the third period, Steam forward Wyatt Gale scored to make it 3-2 at 15:44.

The Steam had five power-play chances but failed to capitalize. Their penalty kill allowed one goal on six chances. Mullen made 23 saves.

Coyotes earn pair of wins on the road

A pair of wins improved the Osoyoos Coyotes to 9-4-0-1.

The Coyotes were in Kamloops on Oct. 24 and defeated the Storm 4-1. Providing offence for the Coyotes were Austin Cleaver, Bobby LaRue, Rainer Glimpel and Tristyn Olson. The Coyotes had a 4-0 lead before Tre Sales broke Brett Soles shutout with one minute remaining. Soles finished with 35 saves.

In Armstrong on Oct. 25, the Coyotes earned a 4-3 win over the North Okanagan Knights. Scoring for the Coyotes were Reid Wilson, LaRue with two and Daniel Stone. The Coyotes erased a 3-1 deficit to pick up the win. Adam Jones made 16 saves for the win.
