Pen High Secondary has two athletes going to track and field provincials

EMMY CARUSO of the Pen High Lakers competed in the junior girls 80 metre hurdles during the Okanagan Zone Track and Field championships at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops on Wednesday. Caruso placed fifth in the event.

No track and field team, no problem.

The Pen High Secondary Lakers didn't field a track and field team, but that didn't stop a handful of its athletes from pursuing the sport.

At the Okanagan Valley championships in Kamloops on Wednesday, Emmy Caruso, Alex Neenan, Jerry Xiang and Joseph Traynor represented the Lakers at Hillside Stadium.

Qualifying for provincials were Xiang in the long jump after placing third, and Neenan, a senior taking second in the high jump. Neenan also finished fourth in the 400 metre run, while Xiang finished sixth in the 1,500-m distance.

Caruso, a junior, placed fifth in the 80-m hurldes and 100-m sprint, and finished seventh in the 200-m sprint. Traynor was sixth in the long jump and 100-m sprint.

The provincial championships take place June 2-4 in Nanaimo.
