The Oliver Fire Department is reminding residents that open burning is only allowed until April 15. This comes after a burn pile got out of hand on Monday.

Firefighters were called to the fire off McKinney Road which started as a burn pile that grew beyond the homeowner’s ability to control.

It spread into some logs, brush and trees. Other residents in the area expressed their concern given the windy conditions on Monday.

Firefighters were on scene for about an hour and contained the fire to an area of 15 metres by 60 metres.

The fire department reminds residents that while open burning ends on April 15, campfires up to 50 cm by 50 cm will still be permitted, as long as they are for heating or warmth, cooking, or Indigenous ceremonial purposes.

Any other property owners conducting open burns after April 15 can be fined and may have to pay the costs for the use of the fire department’s apparatus and firefighters.
