The boat launch at Desert Sunrise Marina is now open after being closed due to the Nk’Mip Creek wildfire, according to the Town of Osoyoos.

The boat launch at Desert Sunrise Marina is now open after being closed due to the Nk’Mip Creek wildfire.

Boaters are asked to be mindful of any firefighting aircraft that may be operating on Osoyoos Lake. While current conditions are calm, winds can change at any moment, said the Town of Osoyoos in a press release.

The OK Falls boat launch on Skaha Lake is still closed and boaters are reminded to be mindful of aircraft using both lakes to help fight the Nk’Mip fire and Thomas Creek fire.

BC Wildfire’s best guess on the current size of the Nk’Mip Creek wildfire is more than 13,000 hectares.

The heavy smoke also made use of air support more difficult, particularly for the air tankers.

“We are anticipating the smoke to start to clear off around 11 a.m. (Friday, July 30) and are hoping to get the aircraft up into the air around then,” said Dani McIntosh, the fire information officer for the Nk’Mip Creek Wildfire.
