Quick action by Penticton RCMP officers helped a 27-year-old, injured woman escape from her Birch Street home after being trapped in an upstairs room by her Rottweiler dog. According to Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth police received a call about 10:30 p.m. Feb. 14 from the woman who reported the dog had attacked her. When RCMP and B.C. Ambulance arrived on scene they could hear the Rottweiler barking inside. Officers distracted the dog giving the woman a chance to move a table against the door. They then put a ladder up to the window of the room and were able to safely get the woman out. Just as officers closed the door the dog gained entry to the room. The victim suffered injuries to her arm and was taken by ambulance to Penticton Regional Hospital for treatment. The dog was reportedly left inside the house to calm down and was picked up the next day by animal control services. The dog’s fate is not known at this time.

Alleged car thief arrested by RCMP

A Penticton woman well known to police remains in custody on a number of charges in connection with an incident Feb. 14 which ended with her arrest in the Kaleden area.

Cpl. Wrigglesworth said police were called about a report of a stolen vehicle from Oliver which they were following and would not pull over. The car turned into Kaleden and police did not pursue it but instead blocked all the exits from the community and the suspect, Amanda Sach, gave herself up.

She appeared in Provincial court Friday facing charges of flight from a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and possession of ammunition while prohibited. The matter was put over until Feb. 28 when she will reappear. Sach had earlier received a 30-month sentence in connection for her part in a home invasion in Nov. 2013.

Stolen items, drugs found

A 36-year-old man is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of stolen property following an incident Feb. 16 on Jermyn Avenue. Police say about 6 p.m. a man reported seeing his previously stolen 2002 brown Chevrolet Malibu in the area of the 500-block of the street.

The man reportedly observed two females inside the car, one of who left and went to her own car parked nearby. When police arrived they found a number of stolen items inside the vehicle, including a large screen television reportedly stolen from a residence several hours earlier and a laptop computer. The man was also found to be in possession of a substantial amount of drugs. He was arrested and later released and the women, aged 20 and 32, were released without charges.

Rash of break-ins

RCMP are also investigating a rash of break ins and thefts that took place sometime overnight on Feb. 19.

That included break ins and attempted thefts from three vehicles in the areas of Troy Place, Halifax Street and Hemlock Street. A Chevrolet 150 pickup with the doors unlocked and the keys in the ignition was also taken from Dawson Avenue but was later recovered in Osoyoos.

The same night two Sea-Can containers were broken into at construction sites in the 2900 and 3000-block of Skaha Lake Road. From the one container an estimated $4,000 in tools were taken, including some with the engraving of “E. Phillips Construction.” The value of the tools from the other site was not available.
